An important part of gun ownership is gun safety and the proper handling and discharging of one’s firearm. The NRA offers what is nationally known as the gold standard when it comes to safe firearm training. They offer a variety of courses to suit the needs of a new gun owner whether it is Home Firearm Safety or Personal Protection training to name a few. The NRA has the right course to suit your needs. Here are some details on courses offered:

Home Firearm Safety Course

This four-hour, non-shooting classroom course goes over the basic understanding and skillset required to safely handle a firearm and safely store it at home. The course covers the NRA’s three rules for the safe handling of a gun. This class also covers main causes of firearm accidents and it covers the parts of a gun, the care, cleaning and storage of firearms in the home. The class provides the NRA Home Firearm Safety handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, Basic Firearm Training Program brochure and when the course is completed you will and NRA certificate.

Personal Protection Courses

These NRA courses taught by certified NRA instructors will instruct you on how to protect yourself and your family. There are 3 different Personal Protection Courses available. Each course has different prerequisites which are listed on the NRA website.

The 3 Personal Protection Course categories are:

NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course

This eight-hour course is designed to teach the fundamental knowledge and skills in the proper use of a firearm for protecting one’s self and family. The course also provides the student with the necessary information to an individual’s right to self-defense. In this class the student should expect to shoot about 100 rounds of ammunition.

Another important feature in this class is in Lesson 3, Firearms and the Law, and Legal Aspects of Self-Defense, which is taught by an attorney that practices in your state and is familiar with this area of the law; a Law Enforcement Officer that has intermediate or higher Peace Officer Standards Training certification in your state, or an NRA instructor that meets the prior criteria stated and is not acting instructor of the class.

This class provides the student with NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet and when the course is completed you will earn an NRA certificate.

NRA Basics Of Personal Protection Outside The Home Course

This course is divided into two levels Level one is a nine-hour course which covers the essential skills for the student to carry, store and use a firearm outside the home. Students can expect a lot of range time and shoot around 100 rounds of ammunition. After completing level one the student may participate in Level two the has the student spending five more hours of range time and expect to shoot around 115 rounds of ammunition while learning advanced shooting skills.

The class also contains the Lesson 3 class, Firearms and the Law, and Legal Aspects of Self-Defense, as described above in the Home Course. This class provides the student with NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, and when the courses are completed you will and level one and level two completion certificates.

NRA Defensive Pistol Course

This NRA course is designed to teach the student with the knowledge necessary to carry a concealed weapon responsibly. This course teaches the student how to develop defensive attitude when carrying a concealed weapon while exhibiting an ethical and responsible behavior. By enrolling in classes such as the ones mentioned above, one can ensure that he/she will enjoy the ownership of his/her firearm.
